Order in the Garage: How to Prevent Accidents and Injuries

For many households in the UK, the garage is more than just a place to park the car. It’s a workshop, a storage space, and sometimes even a mini DIY centre. But because it often ends up holding everything from tools and paint tins to garden equipment and cleaning products, it can quickly become cluttered and hazardous. Sharp objects, heavy machinery, and flammable materials all pose risks if not stored properly. With a bit of organisation and care, however, you can make your garage both safe and practical. Here’s how to prevent accidents and injuries in your garage.
Start with a thorough clear-out
The first step towards a safer garage is to declutter. Take everything out and sort it into categories: tools, car care, gardening, paint, and chemicals. Dispose of broken items and any old or leaking containers, especially those containing oil, paint, or cleaning fluids.
Once you’ve cleared the space, you’ll have a better idea of what you actually use and how to store it safely in the future.
Give everything a proper place
One of the simplest ways to prevent accidents is to assign a specific place for every item. Hang tools on the wall using hooks or pegboards instead of leaving them lying around. This keeps sharp or heavy objects off the floor and within easy reach.
Store heavier items such as jacks, tyres, and power tools on lower shelves to prevent them from falling. Lighter items can go higher up. This not only keeps the space tidy but also reduces the risk of injury when reaching for things.
Store chemicals and flammable liquids safely
Garages often contain petrol, oil, paint, and cleaning products – all of which can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Keep them in tightly sealed containers and store them away from heat sources such as heaters, boilers, or electrical equipment.
If you have children or pets, store chemicals in a locked cabinet or on a high shelf. Always read the labels and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage and disposal. In the UK, you can take unwanted or expired chemicals to your local recycling centre, where they’ll be handled as hazardous waste.
Ensure good lighting and ventilation
Poor lighting and stuffy air can make your garage a risky place to work. Install bright, energy-efficient LED lighting, especially above your workbench and in corners where shadows tend to fall.
Ventilation is equally important, particularly if you’re using paints, solvents, or running engines indoors. Keep the garage door or a window open while working, and consider fitting an extractor fan if you regularly use materials that produce fumes or dust.
Think about ergonomics
Not all injuries in the garage come from accidents – many are caused by poor posture or lifting techniques. Use a workbench at a comfortable height to avoid unnecessary bending. When lifting heavy objects, bend your knees and keep your back straight.
A non-slip floor surface can also make a big difference. Rubber mats or epoxy coatings not only make cleaning easier but also reduce the risk of slipping, especially if oil or water is spilled.
Keep an eye on electrics and heating
Electrical tools and extension leads are handy but can be dangerous if misused. Avoid overloading sockets, and check cables regularly for damage. Use only properly earthed extension leads and unplug tools when not in use.
If you use a heater in your garage, make sure it’s placed well away from anything flammable. Never use open flames or gas heaters in enclosed spaces – they can quickly cause fires or carbon monoxide build-up.
Make safety a habit
Once your garage is organised, the key is to maintain it. Put tools back after use, wipe up spills immediately, and check regularly that everything is stored securely. These small habits take only a few minutes but can prevent serious accidents.
If you have children, teach them that the garage isn’t a play area. Explain which items are dangerous and make sure they can’t access tools or chemicals.
A safer garage is a better garage
A well-organised garage doesn’t just look better – it makes everyday life easier and safer. When you know where everything is and that it’s stored properly, you can work more efficiently and with peace of mind. With a bit of structure and attention to safety, your garage can become a space for projects, repairs, and storage – without the risk of accidents.
