Poor indoor air quality? Here are the most common causes

Good indoor air quality is essential for health, comfort and wellbeing. Yet many people in the UK struggle with stale air, damp, mould or headaches without realising what’s behind it. Poor air quality can stem from many factors – from lack of ventilation to building materials and everyday habits. Here’s an overview of the most common causes – and what you can do about them.
Insufficient ventilation
The most common reason for poor indoor air is simple: not enough fresh air. Modern homes are built to be energy-efficient and airtight, which helps keep heat in but also traps moisture, CO₂ and pollutants if air isn’t exchanged regularly.
Everyday activities such as cooking, showering and drying clothes release moisture and particles into the air. Without proper ventilation, this can lead to stuffy rooms, condensation on windows and, in the worst cases, mould growth.
What you can do:
- Open windows wide for 5–10 minutes two or three times a day to create a draught.
- Use extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Consider a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery if you live in a very airtight home.
Damp and mould
Damp is one of the biggest threats to a healthy home environment. It can come from cooking, bathing, leaks, or poor insulation. When moisture can’t escape, it creates ideal conditions for mould, which can trigger allergies, coughing and irritation of the eyes and airways.
Signs of damp problems:
- Musty smell or dark patches on walls and ceilings.
- Condensation on windows, especially in winter.
- Peeling paint or wallpaper that bubbles or flakes.
How to prevent it:
- Keep your home well ventilated and maintain a steady indoor temperature.
- Avoid drying clothes indoors unless you have good extraction.
- Fix leaks promptly and insulate cold external walls properly.
Temperature that’s too high or too low
Temperature affects both comfort and air quality. Overheating can make the air dry and heavy, while low temperatures increase the risk of condensation and mould.
The ideal indoor temperature is usually between 20°C and 22°C. Bedrooms can be slightly cooler, but avoid letting them drop below 17°C, as cold surfaces can cause condensation.
Tip: Use thermostatic radiator valves to control heat, and don’t turn the heating off completely in unused rooms – it can lead to damp problems.
Pollution from furniture and materials
Many modern building materials, furnishings and cleaning products release chemical substances known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These can cause headaches, fatigue and irritation, especially in newly built or recently renovated homes.
How to reduce exposure:
- Air out rooms frequently after renovation or when new furniture arrives.
- Choose low-VOC paints and eco-labelled products.
- Limit the use of scented candles, air fresheners and strong cleaning sprays.
Dust and particles
Household dust isn’t just dirt – it contains fibres, pollen, skin cells and microscopic particles that can affect breathing. Cooking, candles, fireplaces and electronic devices also contribute to indoor particle levels.
How to keep dust under control:
- Vacuum and dust regularly, ideally with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA filter.
- Avoid smoking indoors.
- Use a cooker hood that vents outside when cooking.
- Air out the room after burning candles or using a wood burner.

We humans are one of the main sources of indoor air pollution. We release moisture, CO₂ and heat, and our daily habits – such as drying clothes indoors, using lots of scented products or forgetting to open windows – all have an impact.
